As Baltimore wrestles with the politics of zoning equity and cultural accommodation, it’s worth looking upriver, literally to Kiryas Joel, a village in Orange County, New York, that became the Town of Palm Tree in 2020.
The housing needs of his district's is different than the majority of Baltimore and should be judged on its own merits rather than as part and parcel of a generic housing plan. The idea that we can have people moving into Baltimore increasing the tax base increasing the vibrancy of the city seems perfectly reasonable to me. But they want certain things, including the flexibility on the housing to increase the size of these dwellings. These folks like large families and to have a large family. You need a large house which means that people who might be looking to move into Baltimore might want to take a place and then add in more bedrooms. Should we limit them because they're different than the communities in the rest of Baltimore.
I wrote another article that I haven't published yet. Basically talking about when a large community of Persian Jews from Queens moved into Great neck Long Island and the issues they encountered. Overall, it's been beneficial to both palm tree and Great neck and could be very beneficial too. Baltimore. But let's not try and pretend that District 5 is like every other District and it should have special accommodations for the needs of the community. I'm with Yitzy on this one.
