I remember knowing that Jessamy was in trouble when Bernstein signs were showing up in numbers in areas where Jessamy had always been strong.

Ah, now I remember. That was the Jessamy–Bernstein upset in 2010. Bernstein’s signs showing up in Jessamy precincts were the early tell that her base was cracking. And you’re right — when Mosby beat Bernstein later, a lot of people inside that office felt blindsided because they thought they were set for 20 years. Appreciate you connecting it back to my piece.

I was scoffed at by actual Md. players but non City residents when I told them that Jessamy was in trouble. Sign numbers are polls for races where polling isn’t being done. In an ironic reversal of tradition, I thought Bernstein was not going to be reelected because he was in a position where as a white guy needed to put up twice as much positive attention to retain that position. Mosby then ultimately crashed and burned.

I wrote about the race for the people who don't remember it.
