Prince George’s County is no stranger to high-stakes transitions. With Aisha Braveboy now seated as County Executive, the race to replace her as State’s Attorney has quietly become one of the most revealing contests in Maryland politics. Three women—each with distinct reputational profiles—are poised to shape the prosecutorial future of the county. But only one will inherit the mantle.
🦈 Wanika Fisher: Political Momentum or Public Service?
Councilmember Wanika B. Fisher has launched her campaign with energy and endorsements, including backing from UFCW Local 400 and UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO.[^1] Her website and launch video emphasize safety, justice, and community uplift.[^2] But behind the polished messaging, some observers question her motivations.
Fisher’s critics describe her as a “political shark”—a figure whose career has been marked more by forward motion than by prosecutorial grounding. From Delegate to Councilmember to State’s Attorney candidate, the concern is not her ambition, but its direction. Is this campaign about serving the people of Prince George’s County, or about serving the trajectory of Wanika Fisher?
🏛️ Tara Jackson: Administrative Excellence, Prosecutorial Questions
Tara H. Jackson, the interim State’s Attorney, brings a résumé of public service that few can match. She served as Chief Administrative Officer under Angela Alsobrooks, then stepped in as Acting County Executive when Alsobrooks ascended to the U.S. Senate.[^3] Her leadership was steady, principled, and widely praised.
But is she a prosecutor?
Jackson’s legal career began in the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office, where she served as a prosecutor and later returned as Principal Deputy State’s Attorney.[^4] She also held the role of Deputy County Attorney, advising agencies and managing legal operations.[^5] This marks her third stint in the State’s Attorney’s Office, and she now leads it as interim chief.[^6]
Still, some voters wonder whether her prosecutorial experience is deep enough to command the courtroom. Her reputation for excellence is undisputed—but in a role that demands daily courtroom leadership, will her administrative brilliance translate?
⚖️ Karen Piper Mitchell: The Prosecutor’s Prosecutor
Karen R. Piper Mitchell, a seasoned Deputy State’s Attorney in Charles County, has not yet filed—but her ActBlue donation page is live, and her reputation precedes her. She was hired as an Assistant State’s Attorney in 1999 and became the first female Deputy under State’s Attorney Anthony Covington in 2011.[^7] She’s a courtroom veteran, a trainer at the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy, and a lifelong Marylander who graduated as valedictorian from Largo High School.[^8]
Of the three contenders, Mitchell’s claim to fame is prosecutorial experience. She’s handled cases, trained officers, and led courtroom teams. Her entry into the race would offer voters a clear choice: a prosecutor’s prosecutor versus two candidates whose strengths lie elsewhere.
🗳️ Lessons from Braveboy
It’s worth remembering that Aisha Braveboy, despite having no prosecutorial experience and never trying a case before her election, won twice and now leads the county. Experience isn’t everything—but it shapes perception, and perception shapes power.
Jackson and Mitchell offer two paths to competence: one through administrative mastery, the other through courtroom depth. Fisher, meanwhile, must convince voters that her ambition is matched by prosecutorial vision.
The race is young, but reputations are already forming. Prince George’s County deserves a State’s Attorney who brings both skill and sincerity. Personally I don;t trust or respect Wanika but the other two look very promising. The voters will decide which combination matters most.
