The dog whistles are shrill: implications about cognitive decline, lazy suggestions she âcanât speak,â and innuendo that borders on ageist slander. Patoka hasnât distanced himself from this narrative. Heâs embraced it. He is amplifying it by showing up, again and again, to a platform that has made her dignity a target.
But Klausmeier hasnât wavered.
She continues to show up for work, advocate policy, and push forward with an earnestness Patokaâs media theatrics cannot touch.

Letâs talk campaign finance. Patoka has raised over $1.3 million, and while thatâs impressive at first glance, a deeper look shows that much of it comes from national Jewish donors outside the district. These contributions reflect engagement from cultural and philanthropic networksânot necessarily grassroots popularity. That distinction matters, especially as Councilman Julian Jones, a true gentleman by every measure, has raised nearly as much. But overwhelmingly from within his own district.

I'm not at all sure how to respond to your piece, above. My first reaction is to be defensive on Izzy's behalf. I haven't followed every word the man has said or written, but I also have not seen or heard the accusations you make that he has been disparaging of Ms. Klausmeier, either explicit or implied - in particular, that she shows signs of cognitive decline or is unfit to serve, or any remarks that could be considered ageist. I would challenge you to offer specific citations of such remarks, including date and venue where those statements were made.
As for the assertion that the CE is steadfast and unwavering in the discharge of the duties of her office, may I remind you that she has changed her tactics and methods in the process of selecting an IG nearly as often as some people change their socks. To boot, each change she has offered seems to have been more hostile to Ms. Madigan than the last. How is it that, after appointing a panel to recommend candidates for the IG position and then sidestepping them and forming another panel that included not only herself, but the former boss of the nominee that was ultimately selected. That reeks of conflict of interest, as far as I can tell.
Additionally, Ms. Klausmeier failed to respond, for several months, to IG Madigan's repeated requests for a meeting to discuss he re-appointment. I don't know how you define the word "noncommunicative", but I surely would say the term applied to the CE in that instance.
Finally, I respect your right to endorse whichever candidate for County Executive you prefer, but I attended last Monday's Council meeting and witnessed the Councilmen's behavior toward Ms. Walker. Five of them were quite cordial and complimentary to her and polite in their questioning. One seemed to me to be pretty equivocal and held his cards close to his vest. The seventh appeared to stop just short of rolling out a red carpet for her and performing an on-the-spot coronation. I suppose that was his right, as your opinions are your right. I do believe, though, that you have seen this whole scenario through a distorted lens. I hope you will make an attempt to get your facts straight and out front in the event that you feel a need to make any more disparaging remarks of your own. Innuendo and accusations without basis are not good looks.
