Something is wrong inside the Young Democrats of Maryland (YDM). You can feel it in the silence. You can hear it in the whispers. And if you listen closely, you’ll notice that the people being pushed out aren’t the ones accused of wrongdoing—they’re the ones who cared enough to ask questions.
Calandra “Cali” Young, a respected organizer and former First Vice President of YDM, was reportedly forced out under circumstances that remain murky and troubling. Those who know Cali describe her as the kind of person politics desperately needs: decent, tireless, and willing to do the work others avoid. Her departure, unaccompanied by any public explanation, has left a vacuum—and a trail of unanswered questions.
Was A Young Woman Assaulted
Now, credible allegations have surfaced suggesting that a friend of YDM State Chair Ruben Amaya may have sexually assaulted a young woman following a political meeting. According to a well-placed source, this incident is at the heart of the internal turmoil. If true, it raises urgent questions: Why has there been no public investigation? Why was the senior woman in the organization removed while the alleged perpetrator remains unnamed and unpunished?
Who Hired Robbie Leonard and WHY?
Ruben Amaya, who previously ran for the Maryland House of Delegates and is now a candidate for Baltimore County Council District 2, reportedly brought in attorney Robbie Leonard to manage the fallout. Leonard, a known figure in Maryland Democratic circles, has not publicly commented on his role. But the optics of bringing in legal counsel to “hush things up,” as one insider put it, rather than to ensure justice, are deeply concerning.
The YDM website remains silent on the matter. No public statement. No acknowledgment of the resignations. No assurance to members that their safety and dignity are being prioritized. The Maryland Democratic Party’s leadership page lists Dr. Charlene Dukes as First Vice Chair—a respected educator, but not a YDM officer—suggesting that the youth wing’s internal leadership may be in flux or under external management.
This is not just a political story. It’s a moral one.
If a young woman was assaulted, why hasn’t this been turned over to law enforcement? If the organization knew, what steps were taken to protect her? And if Ruben Amaya wants to serve the public, he must first serve the truth. That means answering hard questions:
- What happened inside YDM?
- What role did Robbie Leonard play?
- Why was Cali Young removed?
- What is being done to support the alleged victim?
- And most importantly: What is being done to ensure this never happens again?
The silence is deafening. But the community is listening. And we deserve answers.
