The headlines this week were grim: a Maryland teacher charged with attempting to victimize a young girl online. The case is heartbreaking, but itās also a reminderāone that deserves to be said out loud. The system worked. And it worked because Bobby Zirkin cared enough to build it right.
Back in 2018, Zirkin authored the legislation that created the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Fund. It wasnāt a flashy bill. It didnāt make national news. But it made a difference. It ensured that Maryland law enforcement had the tools, training, and funding to track down predators who use the internet to exploit children. It was a bill born of conscience, not calculation.
Zirkin didnāt do it for applause. He did it because he understood the stakes. As chair of the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, he saw firsthand how digital crimes were evolvingāand how vulnerable children were becoming. He listened to investigators. He studied the gaps. And then he filled them.
Today, even though heās no longer in the Senate, his bill still has legs. It still funds the task force. It still equips officers. It still protects children. Thatās the mark of real leadership: when your work outlasts your tenure.
