Barry, you write some very interesting columns and this might be one of your best. I read it two times. Just like one of your other readers just commented, I would be interested in seeing this map that you referred to.
I'll try and find that map. I just finished writing a historical novel which dealt with slavery. It's incredibly unsuccessful. I made it 859 pages and nobody wants to read it. It's too long so now I'm dividing it into smaller books and I'm working on the course of the book set in the research, I saw that map with the slave breathing area which I thought was amazing and I should have kept a copy but it's online and I'll find it sooner or later. It was just that when I was looking at the map of of Congressional district 5, I suddenly realized it's the same map.
Between writing the books and writing about politics, the amount of research I do gets a little overwhelming sometimes.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Thank you for sharing your family history!
Fascinating but terribly chilling. And you make a good case for its effect on local politics for centuries to come.
What is the map you refer to -- is it online? If so, can you link to it?
