Nobody Owns Detroit
Every national reporter covering the Michigan Senate race wants to talk about the same two percent of the electorate. Abdul El-Sayed is Egyptian-American and Muslim, Mike Rogers and the Republicans are working that fact for everything it is worth, and so the cameras all go to Dearborn to ask about Jewish voters, Arab voters, Gaza, and a synagogue attack. Those are real questions. They are also about two percent of Michigan. The election will be decided by the eleven or twelve percent of the Michigan electorate that is Black — and right now, twelve days out, the Democratic nominee has a Detroit problem with a twenty-year pedigree, and everybody in his party knows it, which is why Barack Obama is flying into Detroit on Saturday to try to fix it.
