District 25: Nick Charles and the Quiet Risk of Appointment
The Gentleman Senator—But Not Yet Elected
Nick Charles is widely regarded as a gentleman—soft-spoken, respectful, and professionally composed. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force and built a career in federal acquisition consulting before entering politics. His demeanor is calm, his reputation clean. But in District 25, that may not be enough.
Charles was appointed to the Maryland Senate in December 2023 to fill the seat vacated by Melony Griffith. That appointment came from Governor Wes Moore, not the voters. And while Charles previously won two terms as a delegate, his Senate seat remains unelected. That distinction matters—not just technically, but emotionally.
A Delegation in Transition
District 25 was once a powerhouse. Melony Griffith chaired the Senate Finance Committee. Dereck Davis now serves as State Treasurer. But today, only one of the four legislators representing District 25 has been elected to their current role. The rest—including Charles—are appointees or mid-cycle replacements. That’s not a delegation. That’s a holding pattern.
Anthony Tilghman is running for delegate and looks serious. If he gains traction, he could knock off a member of the team. And if someone steps up to challenge Charles, the senator will need more than quiet likability. He’ll need a record, a voice, and a reason.
Silence Isn’t Neutral
Charles has never been rude to me. He’s not unfriendly. But he hasn’t responded when I’ve reached out. That silence may mean nothing—or it may mean everything. In reputational politics, silence is rarely neutral. It’s either strategic distance or reputational insulation. Either way, it’s worth watching.
Not “Reelection”—Just Election
Charles is not “running for reelection” to the Senate. He’s running for election. That distinction matters. Voters deserve clarity, not incumbency inflation. If no one steps up, Charles may glide through. But if someone does, he’ll need to earn the seat—not just hold it.
