District 23: Ron Watson’s $200K Contract and the Cost of Playing Ball
Ronald L. Watson wasn’t always part of the Prince George’s power grid. His wife Ingrid once took heat from the Ed Burroughs Jack Johnson crew, who reportedly hired a private investigator to challenge her residency. That was back when Watson was still orbiting the edges of influence—more outsider than insider.
But the winds shifted. A détente was reached. Ingrid’s now aligned with Burroughs, and Ron Watson—once politically peripheral—landed a $200,000 consulting contract with the Prince George’s County Board of Education.
That’s not pocket change. That’s grease. That’s payoff.
The contract raises questions—not just about optics, but about legality. Maryland’s Public Ethics Law prohibits state legislators from holding certain government contracts if they create a conflict of interest or appear to benefit from public office. So:
Is Watson eligible to file for reelection while holding a lucrative contract with a local education body?
Does the contract violate ethics rules or procurement standards?
Was it competitively bid, or politically brokered?
No formal complaint has surfaced. No ethics ruling has been issued. But the silence doesn’t erase the questions.
Watson is now aligned with Burroughs and State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy. That’s the current configuration. Whether it’s strategic loyalty or transactional politics, the result is the same: Watson’s not likely to move unless someone makes the contract an issue.
He’s vulnerable—but only if someone’s willing to call it out.
For now, the contract stands. The alliance holds. And the voters of District 23 are left to decide whether this is just business as usual—or something worth challenging.
