From the streets of Baltimore to the slopes of Aspen, Damian O’Doherty has navigated power, politics, and personal adversity with the finesse of a master strategist. He’s not just a man who understands influence, he architects it, whether through a campaign’s whisper network or a crisis that threatens to burn reputations to the ground.
A protégé of Thomas V. “Mike” Miller, Maryland’s legendary Senate President and the longest-serving presiding officer in U.S. history, O’Doherty was steeped early in the alchemy of political survival and legislative strategy. His fingerprints are all over Martin O’Malley’s rise, chairing the former governor’s 2016 presidential campaign and shaping his gubernatorial victories long before that.
But politics was only part of the equation.
As the co-founder of KO Public Affairs, O’Doherty carved out a parallel kingdom in the world of strategic communications and crisis management. KO isn’t just Maryland’s top-tier firm—it’s a national command center for clients navigating reputational minefields and high-stakes media scrutiny. Fortune 100s, real estate moguls, NFL athletes, and university presidents have all turned to KO when the room started to spin.
Whether it was managing messaging around a Supreme Court confirmation, guiding public awareness campaigns on the opioid epidemic, or positioning complex ballot initiatives, KO delivered. The firm’s creative arm has won Emmys and Pollies, while its strategies have helped preserve legacies and steer institutions through turbulent times. O’Doherty’s personal touch is one part machine politics precision, one part cultural fluency. Gritty enough for Baltimore, nimble enough for Aspen.

That cultural bridge is no metaphor. Now based in Aspen, Colorado, O’Doherty brings Maryland’s political muscle to national stagecraft. In June 2025, he helped organize a high-profile Aspen Ideas Festival fundraiser for Governor Wes Moore, a rising star with presidential ambitions. The event was styled with O’Doherty’s signature mix of charm, influence, and subtle power signaling, a cocktail best served with altitude and access.

His Biggest Battle
Yet the strategist’s most defining battle wasn’t fought in a newsroom or backroom—it was personal. In 2011, his daughter Avey was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age two. Their journey, marked by courage and advocacy, intersected with national policy when President Barack Obama invited the O’Doherty family to the White House, using their story to spotlight the Affordable Care Act’s protections for families with preexisting conditions.[1]
Thanks to ACA provisions, Avey was treated at Johns Hopkins without fear of being dropped from coverage. Today, she’s a thriving middle schooler whose resilience mirrors her father’s own. She is strong, defiant, and unafraid of the hard terrain.
The Master of Message
Through it all, Damian O’Doherty has remained what he’s always been: a connector, a strategist, a storyteller. Whether shaping narratives in Annapolis, Aspen, or online, his work continues to reverberate through Maryland’s corridors of power and the country’s cultural heartbeats. He’s a master of all he surveys—because he’s earned every inch of the view.
