Yesterday, respected outreach and constituent services staffer John Funderburk resigned from the office of Congresswoman April McClain Delaney, sending a clear signal that her fledgling tenure in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District is off to a troubling start.
Funderburk was the only real architect of constituent services in Delaney’s office. He came in with a reputation for community engagement and professionalism. But from day one, he was battling a staff culture of disarray—a group of holdovers from David Trone’s era, known for doing things their own way, with little care for constituent needs or administrative efficiency.
This is the same staff culture that forced David Trone to spend $13 million of his own money every election cycle just to cling to the seat. Why? Because Trone didn’t run an effective congressional office. He didn’t build local goodwill or deliver strong constituent service. And now, April Delaney is making the same mistake.
Let’s be clear: Delaney didn’t win CD-6 with an overwhelming mandate. Her primary was splintered, and her general election victory was on par with Trone’s weakest showing. And that’s exactly the point—Trone’s margin shrank each cycle as voters got fed up with being ignored.

It’s a pattern. And Delaney appears poised to repeat it, right down to keeping the same ineffective team.
Funderburk's resignation should be a wake-up call. Instead, it’s just another red flag.
The people of Western Maryland, Frederick County, and the rural areas of Carroll and Montgomery deserve better than a D.C. vanity project. They deserve a real representative, not someone who’s sleepwalking through their term while surrounded by a failing staff that can't return phone calls or fix Social Security issues.
Is April Delaney prepared to spend $13 million—or more—every two years just to keep this seat? Or is she finally going to roll up her sleeves and build a professional, responsive, and community-based office?
Because if not, she’s going to lose this district. Just like Trone nearly did. Senior Maryland political strategist tell me that trone had to run for Senate because one more Congressional election and he probably would have lost the seat. This hits April hard because she won’t have his checkbook to fall back on.
No wonder the sharks are circling Destiny Drake West is being mentioned to primary April and Capitol Police Hero Harry Dunn is spending more time in CD6 thn April does.
