Delegate Eric Bouchat won’t be seeking reelection to the House of Delegates. Instead the Republican from Carroll and Frederick counties is setting his sights on the governor’s office.
Bouchat’s time in Annapolis has been short but punchy. After decades of political zigzags, including a stint as Carroll County Commissioner and repeated attempts to sue over state redistricting maps—he finally landed in the legislature in 2023. Known for his fixation on redistricting reform and his strong conservative credentials he now hopes to take his message statewide.
In a move that surprised few who have followed his career Bouchat has begun airing ads on Fox45 in Baltimore that look more like tourism promos than campaign spots. His website once a hub for legislative updates now reads “Bouchat for Governor” signaling a full pivot to a statewide run.
He also has a thing for hats. Not the low-key baseball cap kind but oversized flag-themed stovepipes. He wore one on the House floor sparking more than a few eye rolls. Whether that’s a branding stunt or a sincere fashion statement depends on who you ask. Either way it fits the image of a man who rarely plays by the unwritten rules of decorum in Annapolis.
Some observers see Bouchat’s run as a long shot. Others call it a swan song. With little statewide name recognition and no deep-pocketed backers, at least not yet, he faces a steep climb. But for Bouchat that might be the point. This could be a way to go out on his terms loud proud and utterly unapologetic.
