🔴 History’s Midterm Curse: Why 2026 Could Break Republicans in Maryland
Every time the White House changes hands, the first midterm election punishes the president’s party. The record is brutal, stretching back to Eisenhower in 1954. Maryland Democrats should be sharpening their knives — history says the GOP bleeds seats.
Bullet Scaffold
- 1952 → Eisenhower (R): Midterm ’54, GOP loses 18 House, 1 Senate.
- 1960 → Kennedy (D): Midterm ’62, Dems lose 4 House, but gain 3 Senate.
- 1968 → Nixon (R): Midterm ’70, GOP loses 12 House, gains 2 Senate.
- 1976 → Carter (D): Midterm ’78, Dems lose 15 House, 3 Senate.
- 1980 → Reagan (R): Midterm ’82, GOP loses 26 House, gains 1 Senate.
- 1992 → Clinton (D): Midterm ’94, Dems lose 52 House, 8 Senate.
- 2000 → Bush (R): Midterm ’02, GOP gains 8 House, 2 Senate (post‑9/11 anomaly).
- 2008 → Obama (D): Midterm ’10, Dems lose 63 House, 6 Senate.
- 2016 → Trump (R): Midterm ’18, GOP loses 40 House, gains 2 Senate.
- 2020 → Biden (D): Midterm ’22, Dems lose 9 House, gain 1 Senate.
Maryland Angle:
- Republicans rode Trump’s return into 2024.
- History says 2026 is the backlash year.
- Expect Democratic pickups in suburban districts, Baltimore County, and the I‑95 corridor.
- GOP incumbents in swing seats should brace for collapse.
Weaponized Call-to-Action:
State Democratic Chairman Steuart Pittman has already laid down the gauntlet: challenge every race, leave no stone unturned. The logic is ruthless but effective — even if Democrats don’t win every contest, forcing Republicans to defend turf drains their resources. Every dollar spent protecting GOP incumbents is a dollar not spent attacking Democrats elsewhere.
Maryland Democrats hold the resource advantage. 2026 is the year to press it statewide, to make Republicans bleed everywhere — from deep-red enclaves to suburban battlegrounds. The goal isn’t just victory; it’s attrition.
Notes (some were in yesterdays article)
District 5 (Carroll County)
- Christopher Eric Bouchat (R) – Margin just above 10 points.Out, running for Gov.
- Chris Tomlinson (R) – Also under 13 points.
- April Rose (R) – Safe win, not included.
- Carroll is usually safe Republican, but 2022 margins for two delegates dipped below 13.
District 7 (Baltimore/Harford split)
- 7A – Kathy Szeliga (R) – Won with ~52–53%, margin under 13.
- 7A – Ryan Nawrocki (R) – Similar margin.
- 7B – Lauren Arikan (R) – Narrow win, also under 13.
- This suburban Baltimore/Harford corridor was highly competitive.
District 9 (Howard County)
- 9A – Trent Kittleman (R) – Won with ~51–52%, margin under 13.
- 9A – Jianning Zeng (R) – Loss.
- 9B – Lisa Kim (R) – Won Howard County’s single-member seat by ~11 points.
- Howard County is trending Democratic, making these GOP wins precarious.
District 29 A (St Mary’s)
- 29A Matt Morgan (R) Won with 40% edge but some see him as vulnerable this time because of his Freedom Caucus foolishness.
Closer:
📌 The pattern is ironclad: midterms after a White House flip are graveyards for the president’s party. Maryland Democrats don’t just have momentum — they have history, resources, and a chairman willing to weaponize both. 2026 is not defense. It’s offense everywhere.
D+13 Makes Republicans Vulnerable
TN CD7 went D+13 over Trump in 2024. Meaning the Republican won by 9% in a district Trump won by 22. If that trend continues Maryland Republicans are in Deep Trouble. Even if +13 shrinks it still indicates that Repubulican voter turnout shrinks and Dems show up.
