The victory was historic, but the real question was whether she could govern with the same force she campaigned with. Two months in, the verdict is still forming—but the early signals are worth watching.
✅ The Good: Swift Moves and Symbolic Wins
- Unified Front (for now): Braveboy’s win was followed by a rare moment of harmony. Councilmembers, mayors, and delegates lined up behind her on election night, declaring a “united executive and legislative branch.” Whether that unity survives budget season is another matter.
- Strategic Appointments: She wasted no time naming Maxene Bardwell as Chief Administrative Officer and Melvin Powell as Deputy CAO for Public Safety—both respected insiders with deep county roots.
- Education & Public Safety Priorities: Braveboy moved quickly to install an interim schools superintendent and a new police chief, signaling her intent to stabilize two of the county’s most volatile institutions.
- Digital Modernization: She brought back tech veteran Vennard Wright to overhaul the county’s digital infrastructure, a move that could streamline services and boost transparency.
❌ The Bad: Fragile Alliances and Budget Storms Ahead
- Council Dynamics: While Braveboy’s early messaging emphasized unity, the council includes several younger progressives known for ambitious spending and ideological fervor. Whether she can temper their impulses—or whether they’ll test her resolve—is still unclear.
- concerns can continue to mount that her political Ally and council chair may get himself. Indicted over 2 and 1/2 million Grant to a non-profit run by someone that he is ”involved” with. That could be very embarrassing for the county executive.
- Inherited Challenges: She stepped into a role vacated by Angela Alsobrooks, now a U.S. Senator, and inherited a county grappling with crime, uneven development, and education gaps. Her ability to pivot from prosecutor to executive will be tested by how she manages these systemic issues.
- Political Ghosts: Braveboy defeated Calvin Hawkins and Rushern Baker III in the primary, but both now serve on her transition team. That’s either a masterclass in coalition-building—or a ticking time bomb.
