For those of us who’ve watched the arc of Maryland’s legislative leadership, this is not just a campaign announcement. It’s a reaffirmation of moral stewardship.
Jones’s tenure has been marked by a conspicuous absence of scandal. During the final years of Speaker Mike Busch’s leadership, at least eleven individuals faced prosecution, charges, or jail time. Under Jones, that era of ethical erosion came to a halt. She didn’t just clean house—she sanctified it.
📚 From Cowdensville to the Capitol
Born in Cowdensville, a historic African-American community in Southwest Baltimore County, Jones graduated from Lansdowne High School and earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her early career began humbly in Baltimore County’s Office of Central Services, but she quickly rose through the ranks, serving as:
- Legislative Officer for County Executive Donald Hutchinson
- Director of Minority Affairs
- Executive Director of Fair Practices and Community Affairs
- Deputy Director of Human Resources, retiring in 2014 after 37 years of service
She founded the Baltimore County African American Cultural Festival and became a trusted voice across communities—business owners, clergy, and constituents alike.

Jones entered the House of Delegates in 1997, appointed after the death of Delegate Joan Parker.
